I just shaved one side of my hair and left the rest long as usual

What is the latest hairstyle trend? Shaved sides of your hair or one shaved side of your hair! This is a hot celebrity hairstyle and the rest of us are jumping on the bandwagon! Last year celebrity hairstyles were feather hair extensions. This hairstyle trend seemed to nose dive and as a salon owner I have very little requests for feathers. This year women with short, medium length or long hair are shaving one or both sides of their hair. They also are getting creative with their shaved sides; adding stenciled color, razor cuts and razor designs! Why not? Your hair will grow back.

You can shave this side of your hair and if you do not like the look or grow tired of it, we can re-part your hair and add hair extensions. Nearly 20 years in the hair salon business and there are still days I wonder "what am I doing?" As with any business, the key to success is great customer service, a supportive staff, training and more training, implementing the latest technology in your field, devoting your $$ to marketing and again... customer service! The internet has increased business profits 10 fold, but no matter what you do and how good you are you will fall prey to scrutiny. Yelp, an online review website, gives the world a chance to review your business. The only disadvantage to Yelp reviews are that their are people and competition that are unscrupulous and will write erroneous reviews. Yelp has what is called a review filter, it is a double edge sword. If the reviewer is not legitimate and/or does not have a history with Yelp, their reviews are automatically filtered. Yelp, pretty much, keeps reviews on your site from people with lots of reviews, friends and have been members for some a while. Your business may receive a 5 star review or a one star review from a newbie to Yelp and this will get taken off your business review. If you receive a review from an "Elite Yelper" the review will never go away! Therefore, if the review is not positive, it is my suggestion to reach out to the Yelper and offer them the opportunity to come back to your business and give it another chance. You are at the mercy of your reviewers, so as I stated exemplary customer service is paramount! You can not "fly under the radar" with the advent of the internet. Also, Yelp gives you the opportunity to openly respond to your reviewers (good or bad) and I suggest you do so!

Hair Salons and restaurants seem to be the most reviewed, and your reviews may be elating or disheartening. Successful hair salons and business are kept on their toes with Yelp reviews and it is not necessarily a bad thing!

Also, service = success. I do not just mean "service," I mean "serving" your client base with a respect, giving back and being there for them. It is my goal, as a hair salon owner, to always be available to our salon customers. Whether they email on a day off or holiday, I will respond to their needs and questions.

Another key element to a successful hair salon is staying up on the latest technological advances. We are hair loss specialists and hair extension specialists and we will test and invest in the cutting edge technology in the market like laser extensions. Some inventions do not work, but I can assure my clients that I have personally tested them!

MARKETING, MARKETING AND MORE MARKETING.... Getting your product, service or both on the internet via website and social marketing is essential. This may be considered a no brainer to some and a mystery to others. You can have the most extensive website, but if it is not marketed properly, then it serves no purpose. Keeping clients abreast of what our hair salon specializes in, showing videos from television appearances as well as home made and connecting socially via facebook and twitter.

Bad Celebrity Plastic Surgery - What are they thinking....

I must preface this blog with stating that I am advocate for a nip and tuck, injectables such as botox and fillers and plastic surgery that corrects a deformity and raises self esteem. That being said, I am also sickened by physicians that perform surgery on perfectly beautiful people and/or over do botox and injectables. We see women of all ages, with over done lips, eyes and skin pulled so tight that they look as if they just exited a wind tunnel. This is just "bad" plastic surgery! At the forefront, are celebrity plastic surgery gone wrong.....

I recently watched Jenna Jameson on Bravo with Andy Cohen. Her "girl next door" looks have transformed to possibly Asian? Her eyes are lifted so high that they resemble a cat, she appears to have lip implants and jaw and cheek implants. She is virtually unrecognizable and this bad plastic surgery has made her look older than her years.

The innovator of bad plastic surgery is Bruce Jenner. I am sure his vanity caused him to want a face lift. He is still correcting the first face lift which makes him look effeminate resembling an old lady! Botox can be preventive for forehead lines and furrows, but is not necessary until one enters into their 30's (in most cases). Lip Implants are never good and difficult to remove. It is not sexy to have unnatural and over sized lips like Taylor from Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Taylor admits she wishes she never
touched her lips.

Watching Reality TV such as Real Housewives, Mob Wives and even Celebrity Apprentice has made me just as guilty as the rest of the world entertained by Mean Girls. The drama of these women everyday lives, takes the focus off your own life which may lack drama or is overly dramatic. What really opened my eyes on women's jealousy towards one another came to head while watching Celebrity Apprentice 2012. Celebrity Apprentice pits women against the men in many challenges and the women turn on each other in seconds. The men, on the other hand, tend to stick together and are not so willing to throw each other under the bus.

There is so much press given to the fact if Hair Extensions are dangerous. The response is two fold.

1) Glued against the scalp hair weaves can be dangerous

2) Properly applied, tension free, strand by strand fusion hair extensions and micro link hair extensions are not dangerous.

why are glued on hair weaves dangerous?

A hair weave glued against the scalp can cause Traction Alopecia a hair loss condition caused by over stressing the hair follicle. Many women with hair weaves tend to also relax their hair and hair relaxer also compromises the hairs integrity and strength.

When a hair weave is glued against the scalp, you are prone to allergic reaction from the adhesive which in some cases contain tar. Removing a glued hair weave is also damaging to the hair because some of the hair is ripped away - even with the proper oil solution. Hair weaves are placed against the scalp and do not allow the hair to grow in naturally. In addition, it is important to understand we shed over 100 strands of our own hair daily, and while wearing a hair weave the shedding becomes trapped in the glue and it difficult to remove

The over use of Clip On hair extensions can also cause damage and traction alopecia. you should change the location of where you clip them in and do not wear them everyday!

Hair Extensions the safe way - strand by strand - fusion or micro link hair extensions

The strand by strand method of attachment is much different than a hair weave. Tiny and evenly proportioned sections of hair are separated (approximately 20 strands) a proper amount of hair is attached away from the scalp. Away from the scalp, allows for the hair to grow and move freely, but more importantly tension free! The method of attachment is by way of keratin protein (which is a natural protein that hair is made of) and the keratin protein is melted at under 200 degrees. Considering most flat irons and curling irons are set at over 400 degrees the heat will not damage the hair. In fact, most fusion hair extensions are touched by the stylist and do not create burns. Another method of attachment is called micro link, this method is heat free. The strand by strand section is the same as the fusion hair sectioning (20 or so strands of hair). A micro link is threaded into the natural hair and a perfectly proportioned hair extension is placed into the link. A special tool clamps and closes the micro link around the natural hair and hair extension. In most cases, micro link hair extensions are reusable up to 50%.

The strand by strand fusion hair extension, properly applied as described, will allow the hair to grow naturally and you can brush right through them. The keratin and micro link hair extension do not cause allergic reactions and traction alopecia. In fact, our clients find that their hair grows in even better while wearing them. HOW TO CREATE LOOSE CURLS AND BEACHY WAVES
DO-IT-YOURSELF WITH THE RIGHT STYLING AIDS

Women with or without hair extensions want the celebrity favorite hairstyle of loose curls. Generally, hair extensions will hold a curl/wave better than natural hair. If your hair is long enough, then you will have an even better loose curl.

Get the look;

LOOSE CURLS

1) wash hair and when damp apply a cocktail of mousse and shine serum for hold and control

2) dry hair 100%

3) clip hair from behind the ears

4) clip the back of the hair, starting at the nape of the neck, leaving a 2 to 3 inch section horizontally

5) for loose curls; take a 3 inch section and a 1.5 to 2 inch barrel curling iron (the larger the barrel the looser the curl)

6) place the curling iron in the middle of the section and start twisting hair through the iron

7) be sure to the ends of the hair is in the curling iron and hold for 4 seconds

8) release the iron and hair spray the curled section

9) proceed through the horizontal section and then drop another 3 inch section and curl

10) at the sides of the hair, take larger sections so the curl is not so tight and curl the sides

11) when completely curled tousle with fingers and spray. You have achieved the perfect loose curl set.

At home hair color can be quite tempting, but I have seen more hair color disasters that take months to fix when one takes coloring their own hair into their hands. Many of our clients hair color involves several formulas to make that perfect shade. There is no one "cookie cutter" way to color hair. Achieving hair color takes much experience that even some hair stylists do not have.

EXPERTLY DONE MULTI TONED HAIR

The natural color of the hair and the percentage of grey hair is a huge factor in color formulation. Do not be deceived by the hair color of the model on the at home hair color box. I spent hours doing a corrective color on a client with brassy roots and green hair. She was a client with hair highlights both high and low lights that were expertly foiled. She decided to give at home hair color a go. She looked at a box color with a stunning sun kissed blonde model on the cover. Color level 7 "Dark Ash Blonde." She ended up with brassy roots on her natural hair and her blonde hair had a green hue. Corrective color involves time, color removal, root correction, foils (sometimes) which all equate to a larger bill than normal at the end of the service.

OVER PROCESSED HAIR

Box hair dyes contain a high content of ammonia and peroxide. You may not need such a potent formula and you will end up with very dry and damaged hair. In the reverse, buying semi-permanent hair color will not cover grey hair.

Running hair color from roots to ends will lead to color build up and lead to an uneven color that is dull and dry. I can spot a women from a mile away who uses at home color, especially those with black hair dye. They consistently run the color through the entire hair shaft and their color is flat, lacking shine and luster.

ANOTHER MISCONCEPTION

HAIR COLOR DOES NOT ERASE OR REMOVE EXISTING HAIR COLOR.

Once the hair is colored and the color is not what you want, it is not so simple to apply another hair color on top of it. This just leads to a darker version of the original color with lots of color buildup on the ends of the hair. Unfortunately you can not lighten hair with hair dye, the color needs to be removed and please STEP AWAY FROM THE BLEACH. There are many professional hair color removal products on the market that are far more gentle than bleach and will only remove the artificial hair color, without stripping the color out of the natural hair. This whole process can render horrific results.

The other issue is that many box dyes contain metallic agents that are impossible to remove, especially on dark hair. Professional products do not contain metallic dye.

Some people decide to dye their entire head black to cover the multitude of errors. Later, they feel the color is too harsh and want to lighten it up. Enter the salon - black hair dye (especially when colored more than once) is a hassle to remove and can lead to dry and damaged hair.

2) Paint Hair Color approx. 3 inches from the root throughout the entire head.

3) Wash and dry hair thoroughly.

4) To Erase harsh root lines, starting at the crown, take 1 inch section of hair. Tease (back comb) the section this will ensure there are no harsh lines.
