Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer review for hairstylists

Dyson SuperSonic Hair Dryer For Hairstylists. Hair concerns,

My son gave me this new, quite expensive, hair dryer for Christmas!  I wanted to try this so badly, It was high on my Christmas list.  Is any blowdryer worth $400 for a hairstylist for professional use?  My quick answer is "no!"  Not to say that I do not love the dryer for my own hair, but it works well on my hair type - not all textures you find in salon.  That being said, I have medium hair texture that does not get frizzy easily, therefore, the dryer works at record speed!

To quote Dyson "The hair dryer re-thought. A hair dryer with a high-speed, powerful, brushless digital motor for faster drying and intelligent heat control for shine. Helps prevent extreme heat damage to protect natural shine. Air temperature is measured 20 times every second, keeping the temperature under control. Drying shouldn't take forever. For fast drying you need controlled, high velocity airflow."  As most of this is true, it is very hard to control the airflow to smooth hair that is thick, higher density and/or curly/frizzy.  As most of my clients enjoy a blow dry that sets well, adds volume and smooths, the Dyson just didn't cut the mustard.

I did enjoy the magnetic attachments work very well and are very clever.  The diffuser worked great mainly because the heat was evenly distributed.  I used the dryer on a client with curly hair (not frizzy) and it helped to define her curls.

It operates like a wind tunnel and  when I changed to a small nozzle the heat was not present to create a smooth blow dry with perfect placed curls.  It is also a bit difficult to handle since most stylists are used to the conventional dryer.  It is far less noisy than conventional blowdryers, especially for stylists, but when I passed by my clients ear while blowdrying - she jumped!  She felt a blast of air that left her ears ringing.

Overall, I will keep this fancy dryer home for my own use and out of the salon.  It is far too expensive to risk operating on a professional level.  I appreciate my son's generous gift and it will work very well for people with fine to medium hair without curl or frizz.
