Weft Hair Extensions Types

Weft Hair Extensions Types

Do you scroll through Instagram confused about different types of hair wefts? Most understand that "hair wefts" (aka hand-tied hair, machine sewn, flat wefts, hybrid wefts, and volume wefts) are applied in a sew-in fashion but beyond that, the types offered vary.

The industry is always looking for ways to "build a better mousetrap!"  Creating the optimal hair weft that is gentle on clients' hair, comfortable, easy to maintain, and helpful for the stylist application.   Below is a breakdown of the types of hair wefts (hair tracks) available on the market for the sew-in application with an explanation of the benefit to your own hair.

Hair Weft Types

Machine Weft & Flat Weft

Both of these extensions types use hair that is sewn onto a flat thread or large thread by machine.  The quality of the hair may vary, but in most cases, the collection process is not as precise meaning the inferior type of hair can be mixed in.  These wefts are bulky at the top and not recommended for fine hair.  The density of the hair on the weft is sparser than the hand-tied and new hybrid "genius" weft since the sewing machines can only allow for a certain quantity to be stitched onto the track.  In this case, the wefts are often doubled (stacked upon one another) which creates even more bulk, hence the "volume weft" was created by Bellami Hair.

Volume Wefts

Bellami hair soon realized that the density of the hair on the machine & flat wefts was too little, therefore, they created a hair weft with one and half times the hair of the conventional weft.  Although there is more hair on the weft, it does not solve the problem of the bulky hair attachment and the weight being excessive for fine hair clients.

Hand-Tied Wefts

Hand-tied wefts have been a staple in the hair extension industry for decades. Hair is literally tied onto a tiny string which allows for perfect density and hair quality selection. As the hand-tied method became popular salons quickly utilized the hand-tied tracks for all customers and they work particularly well on fine hair. The issue is the weft is not as durable as the above-mentioned hair weft types and customers were complaining about the hair shedding from the track, as well as replacing often.  Some found the hand-tied track return hair to be uncomfortable and caused hair matting. Additionally, since the tracks are fine, thick hair customers required many wefts to be stacked upon one another.  Stylists can not cut the tracks without ruining them which is not an issue with machine wefts. I do love the quality of hand-tied hair and I do not mind putting in the extra effort in applying and teaching my customers how to care for them.

In an attempt to build a better mousetrap, the Genius Weft by Bohyme was created. The Genius weft is the best of all worlds! The attachment area is super fine, the hair is high quality, the attachment can be cut for perfect fitting, no return hair with excellent durability.

We quickly jumped on the bandwagon and are now stocking the hybrid Genius weft. This weft will work for most hair density and the fact that it is durable is exciting since hair is meant to be re-used.  That being said, we still stock all the above-mentioned hair weft types to suit our clients' individual needs.

Hair extensions are not one-size-fits-all, as a salon specializing in hair extensions we know it's important to stock all methods, i.e. keratin individual strands, i-tips, Veila pull-thru, and tape-in.  A free consultation with a full evaluation of our client's hair helps to determine which extension type is suitable for ones' natural hair and lifestyle.  We are passionate about what we do, we always seek out the latest and greatest hair extension methods keeping quality paramount.
